私たちは普段、物を見ている。いや、正確には物体が跳ね返した光を見ていることになる。

私たちが目の前にある物を視認できるのは、物体が周囲の光を吸収したり反射したりすることによって、色や形が露わになるからである。例えば、葉っぱが緑に見えるのは、可視光の中で赤や青などの光を吸収し、緑色の光のみを反射していることによる。私たちは光が無ければ何も見ることができない。しかし、光そのものに形は無く、色や匂いも感じることができないため、光そのものの輪郭を見出すこともまた困難となる。 物語の中ではしばしば、光は比喩として描かれ、その多くが人々に恩恵を与えるものとして形をとることで読み手に認知を促し、また、相対する存在として影が登場する。こうした語り口は、すり抜けていく光を留め、形を与えるための一つの知恵だろう。また絵画史では、例えば印象派はそれまでの描画方法を刷新し、絵具の使い方やタッチの残し方を工夫することで光に満ちた画面を描こうとしたことが思い出される。彼らは混色を避け、短いストロークによって光を捉えるのと同時に影の色まで丹念に描写することを試みた。 光とは、その普遍さゆえにいかようにも語ることができ、様々な形で指し示すことが可能なテーマだが、結局のところ私たちは、果たして「何を」光として捉え、認識していることになるのだろうか。

本展では、そうした好奇心を掻き立てる、身の回りに溢れている「光」に焦点をあてます。 誰もが知識としては持ちつつも、それが当然であるがゆえに抜け落ちていく存在として。また、ある種の比喩や必然的に影を生み出す存在として。本展で展示されている作品にはどのような光が宿り、鑑賞者は作品を通して一体何を感じ取ることになるのでしょうか。

We usually see an object. To be precise, we see the light reflected from the object.

Our visual recognition has been explained by the fact that an object absorbs and reflects light around, and then disclose the object’s color and shape. For example, we can see the color of green leaves because each leave absorbs red and green light, and reflect only green light to be visible. We cannot see anything without light. Besides, it has no shape, color and smell. This makes us hard to see the outline of light. Light in narratives often represents metaphor: in most cases, light takes form as something that provides people with benefits, which enables us to recognize the existence of light. On the other hand, shadow appears as the relative thing, meaning and/or metaphor for light. Such descriptive style is one of writers’ or speakers’ techniques to keep light in mind and have its shape. Looking back on art history, in particular the impressionists remind us of their innovative drawing methods. They accomplished techniques such as how to use paint effectively and how to get fine touch in their drawings. They avoided mixing a lot of coloring materials and using shorter strokes than previous ways, which capture light in artworks. They additionally strived to describe what shadow is or even what color it is. As for its universality, light can be shown in various methods. However, what is light exactly, and how do we recognize it? This exhibition features light arousing our interest in daily lives. Under the title “Aspects of Light,” it makes clear how much we overlook light even though we know the meaning of the word ‘light,’ and how productive it is to imply another meaning and bring shadow. The works in the exhibition are illuminating various aspects of light and messages from the artists.
