成安造形大学の設置者である京都成安学園は2020年に創立100周年を迎えます。学祖である瀬尾チカは、まだ女性の社会進出が困難だった時代に、ものづくりを基本とした教育を行い、女性の自立を目指した成安裁縫学校を建学しました。創立から100年が経とうとしている現在、私たちが暮らす社会は、瀬尾チカが目指した社会のあり方に対して、どのように変わることができたのか。その現状を見つめ直し、未来を考えるために、今回のセイアンアーツアテンションでは「ルーツ」をテーマとした展覧会を開催いたします。
　私たちが目の前の状況を考える時に、「ルーツ」について考えることは、なぜそのような状況が起こっているのか、そもそも何を目指していたのかを理解するヒントとなります。しかし一方で、社会には「ルーツ」が全く不明であったり、「ルーツ」に束縛されることが新たな問題につながることもあり、「ルーツ」を一元的、あるいは短絡的に捉えることの危うさにもまた気をつけなければなりません。本展覧会では、「ルーツ」についてアプローチした、様々なアーティストの作品を集めて紹介し、「ルーツ」とはそもそも何か、どのように捉えるべきかという点を軸に、「ルーツ」を辿る面白さや重要さ、危うさを自覚し、社会と、そして本学のこれからのあるべき姿を来場者とともに考えていく場となることを目指します。

Kyoto Seian Gakuen, the establisher of Seian University of Art and Design marks the 100^th anniversary of the foundation in 2020. Chika Seo founded Seian Saiho Gakkou (Seian Sewing School) to provide new education to women based on craftsmanship and support their independence in a very difficult period with women’s advancement in society. It has been almost 100 years since the school was founded, but how did our society change today by the influence of her ambition. To reconsider the present situation and think about our future, a series of events named SEIAN ARTS ATTENTION has a special exhibition with the theme of roots.

Thinking of the root of the problem can be a clue when understanding what made the problem, or what we want to do in the first place. On the other hand, there sometimes are cases where no one knows the root or where sticking to the root could lead to emerging problem in society.  It indicates that we should not consider the origins of problems, for example, nationality, race, religion and sexuality, excessively and straightforwardly. This exhibition holds a variety of art collection approaching the meaning of roots: what it exactly is and how we should recognize it. We aim to create an opportunity to indicate how interesting, important and uncertain these roots are, and then think about the relationship between SUAD and society with you.
